Traffic Safety Trainings for Grade 6 Students!

The European Commission supported a series of traffic safety trainings targeting more than 500 grade 6 students at six schools in the Turkish Cypriot community, including Canbulat Özgürlük Ortaokulu, Şehit Zeka Çorba Ortaokulu, Demokrasi Ortaokulu, Lefke Gazi Lisesi, Şehit Turgut Ortaokulu, and Mehmetçik Ortaokulu. The trainings, organised in partnership with TRAKAYAD, started on Monday, 19 February at Canbulat Özgürlük Ortaokulu and Şehit Zeka Çorba Ortaokulu in Famagusta. The aim of the trainings was to raise awareness on the importance of traffic safety and the impact of traffic users’ behaviour on traffic crashes. A total of 500 students participated in the trainings and learned about how to be safe in traffic. Information was also provided on what actions are being taken by the EU to reduce traffic crashes in Europe as well as EU's policy to halve the number of fatalities between 2010 and 2020.

The EU has provided a total of €3 million in funds and technical assistance for the improvement of traffic infrastructure and traffic safety between 2009 and 2013 in the Turkish Cypriot community. The programme has helped improve the standards of vehicle inspection, the collection and treatment of data in case of collision and the operational management of traffic. It also enabled the development of a highway plan to address current and future mobility needs and to eliminate some of the traffic accident “black spots”. The EU is planning to provide further technical assistance to support the implementation of actions aiming to align the rules and the practices with international and EU standards in the domains of vehicle registration, driving licensing and vehicle inspection in the Turkish Cypriot community.

Protect the Environment Training for Kids

A "Protect the Environment" training organised in cooperation with the EU-funded Capacity Building in the Solid Waste, Waste Water Sector Project took place with the participation of 35 children on 15 February at the EU Infopoint. The event aimed to raise awareness in environmental protection for the children aged between 4-12. The interactive training included a short video on marine waste and a lively Q&A session with the participants.

The first-ever European Strategy for Plastics, adopted on January 16, 2018, will transform the way plastic products are designed, used, produced and recycled in the EU. It will protect the environment from plastic pollution whilst fostering growth and innovation, turning a challenge into a positive agenda for the Future of Europe. There is a strong business case for transforming the way products are designed, produced, used, and recycled in the EU and by taking the lead in this transition, the EU will create new investment opportunities and jobs. Under the new plans, all plastic packaging on the EU market will be recyclable by 2030, the consumption of single-use plastics will be reduced and the intentional use of microplastics will be restricted.
