Safe Spaces for Youth

European Commission Supported International Youth Day Events

The European Commission supported a series of events organised by HASDER and EU Infopoint as part of International Youth Day (12 August) celebrations. The theme for International Youth Day 2018 was Safe Spaces for Youth. Youth need safe spaces where they can come together, engage in activities related to their diverse needs and interests, participate in decision making processes and freely express themselves.
The activites which were supported by the European Commission this year included a roundtable discussion on 12 August, Walled City Bike Tour at Selimiye Square, Nicosia on 17 August and Youth Bands Concert at Selimiye Square, Nicosia on 19 August.

European Youth Week promotes non-formal learning based on self-reflection and self-expression. Through European Youth Week and International Youth Day events, spaces for youth will be provided to actively engage in discussions, exchange personal opinions and ideas, and express themselves through art, music and sports.
As part of the Aid Programme to the Turkish Cypriot community, the EU has supported a number of civil society projects and initiatives, including a focus on youth. In addition to this, support has been provided to harmonise the Turkish Cypriot community with the EU when it comes to social inclusion and allowing for young people to register their own NGOs and participate fully in society. The European Union Scholarships Programme allows Turkish Cypriot students, researchers and professionals to study in the EU and gain exposure to other European cultures. Between the academic year 2007/08 and 2018/19 a total of 1370 scholarships have been awarded for a total budget of €18 million.
