European Science and Fun Day Celebrated in Trikomo/İskele and Lapithos/Lapta

The European Commission marked the importance of research, development and innovation during the "European Science and Fun Day”, an open day for secondary and high schools organised on 11 October in Tirkomo/İskele, as part of the European Researchers’ Night. The aim of the event was to inspire high school students by giving them an opportunity to meet researchers, and be exposed to hands-on experiments, science shows and quizzes. After the opening speeches by Mr.Kjartan Bjornsson and Mr.Rauf Ataöv, more than 400 students from 8 different schools in this region were able to interact with scientists through displays that promote the development of scientific thinking. Students were encouraged to explore nature and biodiversity in Cyprus and learn more about beekeeping and caving.

The second event of the European Science and Fun Day took place on 25 October in Lapithos/Lapta with the participation of more than 350 students from 10 schools in the region.
European Researchers' Night takes place every year in more than 250 cities across Europe. There are events in the EU Member States that highlight the important role research plays in our daily lives and science as a career. Encouraging more young men and women to choose a career in research and science is crucial for Europe's future growth, which is increasingly dependent on innovation in products and services.

Youth Environment Festival - Keep it Green, Keep it Clean

The Youth Environment Festival "Keep it Green, Keep it Clean" took place at Ayorgi/Karaoğlanoğlu Beach on 21 October in coordination with the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, European Parliament Information Office in Cyprus and EU Infopoint. The event hosted environmental NGOs and interactive activities for the kids. The participants collected rubbish from the beach and they received free reusable mug as a memory of the day.
With the support of the European Commission, the EU Infopoint organised a Health and Safety at Work training in Galatya/Mehmetçik. More than 30 employees of the local community attended the training and they had the opportunity to learn how to make work places safer and healthier.
The 2nd Open Door Festival: “Civil Society on the Road” celebrated civil society in 4 different regions.

The Open Door Festival's aim was to promote the work of CSOs, encourage volunteerism and enhance networking of CSOs and other stakeholders. The Festival was organised by CSOs in collaboration with Civic Space, a technical assistance project funded by the European Union.
The 2nd Open Door Festival has been a one-month lasting event with 4 CSO Fairs organised in Nicosia, Lefka/Lefke, Farmagusta, Galateia/Mehmetçik that took place every Saturday of October. In addition, 26 activities were implemented by CSOs during the Festival.
