Short Film Screening & Discussion on EU Anti–Trafficking Day

The European Commission marked EU Anti-Trafficking Day 2016 with a short film screening followed by a discussion on human trafficking in Nicosia on 18 October at the Cyprus Turkish Medical Association and on 21 October at Famagusta Bandabulya in partnership with MAGEM, Refugee Rights Association and Cyprus Turkish Medical Association. The topics included EU’s policy on human trafficking, factors that lead to trafficking in human beings, the work of NGOs in this area as well as the local situation, measures and recommendations. After the opening speeches by Pelin Maneoğlu and Mr.Mehmet Harmancı, the presentations were made by Dr.Minel Özen, Faika Deniz Paşa, Jade Sims and Charlotte Goyon at the Nicosia event and by Mustafa Öngün, Jade Sims and Caroline Enegren at the Famagusta event.

The aim of the events was to raise awareness on trafficking in human beings and increase the exchange of information, knowledge and best practices amongst the different actors working in this field. The European Union's policy for addressing trafficking in human beings is comprehensive focusing on prevention, protection of victims, prosecution of criminals, and the developing of partnerships with the various actors involved. This approach is human rights based, victims centred, gender specific and child sensitive.
As part of their EU-funded project, Youthopia – human rights project, MAGEM recently carried out a research component on human trafficking in the northern part of Cyprus. The Refugee Rights Association (RRA), as part of their EU-funded project “Human Rights for All,” promotes the rights of the refugees with another NGO partner, KISA. The Cyprus Turkish Medical Association is concerned with the health aspects of human trafficking victims including access to services.

Energy Efficient Buildings & Green Energy Panel

The European Commission highlighted the importance of energy efficient buildings and green energy during a panel organised by the EU Infopoint in partnership with Union of the Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects on 25 October at KTMMOB. After the opening speech by Mr.George Markopouliotis and Mr.Emin Bilgen, the event hosted an EU speaker, Assoc.Prof.Francesco Causone who covered the EU Policy on efficient buildings and green energy and provided examples on implementations from various Member States of the EU. Moreover, local speakers Assoc.Prof.Serkan Abbasoğlu presented the local implementations and provided recommendations, Assist.Prof.Murat Özdenefe gave a presentation on  energy efficient  buildings and implementations in the Turkish Cypriot community and  Assoc.Prof.Murat Fahrioğlu made his presentation on green energy and implementations in the Turkish Cypriot community.
The European Union has set itself a 20% energy savings target by 2020.  All EU countries are required to use energy more efficiently at all stages of the energy chain from its production to its final consumption.Reducing energy consumption and eliminating energy wastage are among the main goals of the European Union's energy policy. The EU supports energy efficiency for competitiveness and for meeting the commitments on climate change.  Renewables will continue to play a key role in helping the EU meet its energy needs beyond 2020. EU countries have already agreed on a new renewable energy target of at least 27% of final energy consumption in the EU as a whole by 2030. This target is part of the EU's energy and climate goals by 2030.
European Day of Languages was celebrated with an information session organised by the EU Infopoint on 6 October to emphasize the importance of learning languages and how being multilingual helps improve understanding and the interaction of different cultures. The event hosted Ms.Martha Neokleous, Directorate-General for Translation Field Officer at the European Commission Representation in Cyprus.  The participants interacted with each other during the Q&A session after her presentation.
The EU Infopoint welcomed Mr.Ediz Hun, the famous actor and environmentalist, as the guest instructor for the "Advocacy Training" event which was organised by the Green Action Group on 14 October under the Cans of Hope project, funded by the EU.
