Enhance Your Skills, Increase Your Career Opportunities

The European Commission has recently announced a new Skills Agenda for Europe, which aims to ensure people develop the skills necessary for the jobs of today and tomorrow.  This agenda is essential to boost employability, competitiveness and growth across the EU. On this occasion a series of workshops for young people were held to highlight the importance of developing the skills necessary for job searching, career planning and entrepreneurship. The workshops were organised in Mağusa/Famagusta, Mehmetcik/Galatia, Girne/Kyrenia, Yeşilyurt/Pentageia and Lefkoşa/Nicosia between 19-29 July. The youth was informed about EU’s new skills agenda as well as the Human Resources Development Sector Programme under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community with a total budget allocation of €13 million since 2006. The workshops, targeting youth aged 18 – 30, also aimed to inform young people about local and EU resources and opportunities.

During the workshops, participants were introduced to career planning, job searching strategies and skills, CV preparation, networking, applications, interview skills, improving skills by volunteering, interning and part-time jobs and entrepreneurship by Ebru Deniz Tekman and Bakiye Yalınç. In addition to this, they met people with inspiring stories. Yusuf Duman, the director of Şinya Guest House, advised young people not to measure the success with financial values but be reliable individuals. The workshops ended with fruitful Q&A sessions.

Finnish and Nordic Startup Ecosystem Seminar

The European Commission invited entrepreneurs and startups to a seminar about the Finnish and Nordic Startup Ecosystem and Startups4Peace project, which is implemented by the Finnish Embassy in partnership with the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce (KTTO) and Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEBE). The seminar which took place on 30 June at Merit Hotel Nicosia also informed participants about how to win a trip to the legendary and leading startup event SLUSH in Helsinki, Finland.
The keynote speaker at the event was Ghita Wallin, Chief Marketing Officer of SLUSH Brand Team, and the event was open to all startups and entrepreneurs in the Turkish Cypriot community, highlighting the Startups4Peace project implemented by the Embassy of Finland in partnership with KTTO and KEBE.
Ms.Ghita Wallin mentioned that from the very start, Slush has been about doing things differently with the philosophy that extends everything it does more like a festival than a conference. During his speech, Mr.George Markopouliotis, Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, stated that entrepreneurship is a powerful driver of economic growth and job creation. It creates new companies and jobs, opens up new markets, and nurtures new skills and capabilities. These new companies, especially SMEs, represent the most important source of new employment: they create more than 4 million new jobs every year in Europe.
The Startups4Peace gives Cypriots a chance to take part in Europe’s Leading Startup Event: SLUSH which takes part in November each year. In 2015, Slush brought together 15,000 attendees, including 1,700 startups, 800 venture capital investors and 630 journalists from exactly 100 countries.

Recently, the European Commission has launched a EUR 1,500,000 call for proposals promoting Innovation and Change in Schools and the Improvement of Employability in the Turkish Cypriot community. The seventh “Innovation and Change in Education” Grant Scheme targets these objectives by supporting the improvement of quality and efficiency in education and training and the promotion of equity, social cohesion and active citizenship; and  promoting lifelong learning and activities enhancing entrepreneurship. The application deadline for the project is 18 October 2016 18:00 (Cyprus time). The first information session was held at the European Union Programme Support Office on 15 July.
