The European Commission marked the European Day of People with Disabilities

The day was highlighted with a panel on “Accessibility for People of All Abilities” on 11 December at Bedestan in Nicosia. The panel started with the opening speeches of Mr. Asım Akansoy and Mr. George Markopoulioutis who underlined the importance of the equal access for the disabled persons in the society. Furthermore, accessibility issues and challenges, recommendations, short term and long term projects on accessibility for disabled persons, the EU policy and EU examples for accessibility rights of disabled persons, and examples on the inclusion of disabled individuals in the Turkish Cypriot community were presented and discussed at the panel.
Around 80 million people in the EU are affected by a disability to some degree. Making Europe more accessible to those with a disability is a key part of the EU’s overall disability strategy. The EU promotes the active inclusion and full participation of disabled people in society, in line with the EU human rights approach to disability issues. Disability is a rights issue and not a matter of discretion.
