Solid Waste Management: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle NOW!

The European Commission marked the importance of solid waste management with two consecutive panels on 7 April at Merit Hotel, Nicosia and on 8 April at the Bandabulya, Trikomo/Iskele. The EU policy on solid waste management, EU harmonisation in the Turkish Cypriot community, and the local communities’ current implementations were discussed by the speakers and representatives from local communities. In addition to this, information on the upcoming grant call for local communities was shared by the European Commission. Thanks to Davide Bixio, İbrahim Alkan, Andy Whiteman, Erkan Tekeli, Agustin Moya Colorado for their contribution to the panels.
Turning waste into a resource is one key to a circular economy. The objectives and targets set in European legislation have been key drivers to improve waste management, stimulate innovation in recycling, limit the use of landfilling, and create incentives to change consumer behaviour. If we re-manufacture, reuse and recycle, and if one industry's waste becomes another's raw material, we can move to a more circular economy where waste is eliminated and resources are used in an efficient and sustainable way.

European Youth Week 2016

The European Commission underlined the importance of providing more and equal opportunities for young people and encouraging young people to actively participate in society during visits to high schools as part of European Youth Week from 25 April to 29 April in Güzelyurt/Morphou, Yeni Erenköy/Gialousa, Girne/Kyrenia and Lefkoşa/Nicosia. The aim of the tour was to promote the EU Youth Strategy and opportunities for youth both locally and across Europe. The events included information sessions, where various organisations including European Commission, European Union Coordination Centre, Youth Department, Civic Space, Universal Patients' Rights Association, POST Research Institute, SOS Children's Village, Youth Power and EU Infopoint hosted information stands that students visited to get more information about local and EU opportunities. These included opportunities in vocational education, internships, civil society projects & volunteerism, as well as employment and scholarship programmes. European Youth Week 2016 in the Turkish Cypriot community aimed to encourage young people to take part in civil society and in the employment market.
