Cypriots voice their views on gender equality!

The EU Infopoint in cooperation with the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus and the European Parliament Information Office in Cyprus organised a Gender Equality & Social Media event on Tuesday 26 May at EU Infopoint from 3 pm to 5 pm. Five short films filmed on the streets of Cyprus, capturing the voices of Cypriots on various issues related to gender equality screened. The Head of the EC Representation Georgios Markopouliotis and the Acting Head of the EP Information Office Alexandra Attalides gave speech at the event.

As part of the Europe Day celebrations this event aimed not only to raise awareness on gender issues, but also the need to improve gender equality in Cyprus. It was also an opportunity for networking for practitioners and community members interested in gender equality. The aim of the short films that were screened at the event was to give Cypriots the opportunity to voice their views, without interferences, and to capture a genuine snapshot of what people think, on topics such as gender equality, women and politics, empowering women, EU and women and violence against women. These views captured on the films are reaching a wide range of audiences through social media and they promote interaction and dialogue among Cypriots.

According to the Eurobarometer 2015 results, slightly more than half of the Cypriots who responded in the survey believe that inequalities between women and men in Cyprus are either very widespread or fairly widespread. At the same time, slightly less than half believe that inequalities in Cyprus among the two genders are either fairly rare or very rare.
